On Wednesday, the CM had offered to hold an inquiry into the scam by a retired High Court judge which was not acceptable to the Congress. When the Congress continued its dharna soon after the House met this morning, the CM had to budge and order a CoD inquiry. But he set aside the Congress’ demand for a CBI inquiry.
Leader of the Opposition V S Ugrappa demanded a CBI inquiry and said that only a body with powers to prosecute must conduct the inquiry. He even suggested a simultaneous investigation to be carried out by both the CBI and CoD, which was shot down by Acharya.
BMTF report
Ugrappa demanded that the report by the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) on garbage contracts be used as a base and criminal proceedings be carried out against the guilty. In addition, he demanded that a departmental inquiry be conducted into the matter along with recovery proceedings.
Opposition members also demanded that the 30 contractors who were given the garbage disposal contracts from 2007-2010 be black-listed and new tenders be called for.
Hindrance
Yeddyurappa assured the agitating members that stern action will be taken against the culprits. He reiterated that the only thing coming in the way of immediate action against the contractors was the amount of garbage generated in the City.
Minister for Transport R Ashok pointed out that the contractors were originally given contracts in the early 90s and since then they have been awarded contracts by successive governments.
