Gay dating app holds clue to murder

The Bengaluru police have “accidentally discovered” a gay dating app while investigating the murder of a homosexual man and believe they are on the verge of creating history: solving a crime with the help of an app.

“We have almost zeroed in on the prime suspect but are yet to catch him,” a senior officer told DH but refused to give details of the app, saying that would hamper the investigation.

Case of murder
Thirty-five-year old Muralidhar’s body was found with stab injuries in a toilet on the first floor of KR Market on the night of April 11, when the Bengaluru Karaga festival was under way. The City Market police registered a case of murder and began investigation.

Police first picked up 12-13 people who were on the victim’s contact list and found out that all of them are homosexuals and that they had invited Muralidhar for Karaga that night. The men told police that Muralidhar was a homosexual, too. Further investigation led police to the app that serves as a networking platform for like-minded gays. Police suspect that the crime was the fallout of a brawl or a financial dispute born out of a sex deal that went awry. “We have formed two investigating teams. One is using conventional policing methods and the other is looking for technical clues. We have two leads and both of them could take us to the same person,” the officer said. “We have identified the prime suspect. He has a criminal record and is on the run.”

Investigators have combed the house rented by Muralidhar in Moodalapalya, Vijayanagar. He was unmarried and was living alone.

Sleuths found books of civil services and other competitive examinations. He may have prepared for the exams or was tutoring others, the officer said. Muralidhar’s parents had died and left for him a house in Anepalya which he had rented. He didn’t work and lived off the house rent, the officer said.
