'Govt docs must prescribe generic drugs'

The department of health and family welfare has asked government doctors to prescribe only generic drugs to patients failing which disciplinary action will be taken.

In a circular issued on Tuesday, the department mandated that doctors working in all government hospitals run by the department of health and family welfare and  the medical education depa rtment should prescribe generic medicines to patie nts.

Action would be taken against doctors who do not adhere to norms under the Karnataka Civil Services Rules and under the Medical Council of India Act.

This is being done under the Janaushadhi-Janasanjeevini programmes that the Union and state governments have started to promote generic medicines.
