More than 3,000 farmers have been staging a protest against acquisition of their land for the project at Hemmigepura since Wednesday.

Addressing the farmers, the former prime minister urged the state government to respond to their demands. Declaring that he would not rest till they got justice, Deve Gowda pledged his “full support” to the agitating farmers. He assured to join them after he returns to the City on Saturday.

Earlier speaking to reporters at the party office, Gowda said that the state government had failed to respond to the farmers’ woes despite holding a people’s court over the project, recently. Alleging that about 35 farmers who were staging a peaceful protest were arrested on Wednesday, Gowda said: “I have no option but to join hands with the farmers. It will be a do or die protest.”

The farmers were even assaulted by goons hired by the project promoter, Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE). “Farmers are being treated badly across the State. They are being caned and handcuffed. I have never seen such a government in my life,” he castigated.

Earlier, Gowda submitted a memorandum to the Governor H R Bhardwaj at the Raj Bhavan seeking appropriate action against the government for its “inhuman” treatment of farmers.
