A green corridor was created on Thursday from Kempegowda International Airport to M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre to transport the heart of a six-year-old girl.

The heart, airlifted from Mangaluru to KIA, saved the life of a nine-year-old boy from the same city.

The girl from Chitradurga was declared brain dead on Thursday. The family then agreed to donate their daughter's organs.

The recipient was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy with severe LV dysfunction (a condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood decreases).

He was on medical management with the M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre for the last seven months and was later advised to undergo a heart transplant.

The transplant was conducted by a five-member team of doctors.

"It was difficult for the boy to play because of his heart condition," said Dr Nagamallesh U M, senior consultant, heart failure and transplant.
