The Bangalore Metropolitan Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already completed the construction of the alternative diversion road on Ambedkar Veedhi about five months back to facilitate movement of traffic as the road will be blocked for a period of three years for metro work.

The Corporation had been waiting for the High Court nod to construct the second alternative diversion road before starting the construction of the corridor. The delay in the approval is cited as the reason for delay in implementation of the project too.

The BMRCL has already awarded tenders pertaining to UG-2 (East West corridor) at a cost of Rs 993 crore while it is expected to award UG-1(North-South corridor) from Swastik to K R Road in the coming months. The work on the second alternative diversion road, which will take about two months will be immediately started.

Sources in the BMRCL said that the High Court decision will see the Corporation bring high precision tunnel boring machines specially developed for the project from Japan by November or December. Further, the construction of UG-2 corridor is expected to begin sometime early next year.

The Corporation’s priority is to commission the stretch between Byappanahalli and Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is scheduled for December 2010. The UG-2 corridor will be independent of reach-1, the corporation said.
