The High Court on Monday ordered the University Grants Commission (UGC) to submit details of a nomination made to the academic senate of the Visvesvaraya Technical University (VTU).

Hearing a petition by Jagadish Reddy, who was removed as nominee and replaced with Dr Dhananjaya Reddy, Justice A S Bopanna extended the stay granted earlier by the court over the appointment of Dhananjaya.

Jagadish Reddy challenged Dhananjaya’s nomination. He argued that the UGC replaced him on a recommendation by the VTU Vice-Chancellor H Maheshappa, which was “illegal and arbitrary”. He also contended that Dhananjaya’s appointment was “illegal” since the UGC hadn’t terminated his (Jagadish Reddy’s) tenure as nominee. The UGC cannot make such an appointment without cutting his tenure short, Jagadish Reddy maintained.

Justice Bopanna directed the Assistant Solicitor General, Krishna Dixit, who appeared on behalf of the UGC, to submit details of the nomination, and adjourned the matter until further hearing.
