The High Court of Karnataka on Monday asked the BBMP to submit a status report on the removal of encroachments and desilting of stormwater drains in Bengaluru.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar was hearing an impleading application filed by the nonprofit, Samarpana, about the non-clearance of encroachments on stormwater drains in the city. The petitioner filed an impleading application based on the orders of the Supreme Court in a petition filed by Citizens Actions Group.

According to the petitioner, encroachments on lakebeds and stormwater drains where civic agencies had permitted construction resulted in flooding of houses in  low-lying areas and subsequent deaths during the monsoon.  Residents have been facing the problem for the past two decades.
