The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday suspended the conviction of M Jayalakshmi Devi, a former member of the Bangalore University Syndicate, and granted her bail in connection with a bribery case.

On March 26, Lokayukta Special Court had sentenced Jayalakshmi to four years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 75,000 under Prevention of Corruption of Act. She was also awarded one-and-a-half year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 60,000. The sentences were to run concurrently.

N K Sridhar of Pragun Jindal Education Institution had filed a complaint in the Lokayukta Court alleging that Jayalakshmi demanded a bribe of Rs five lakh to accord permission for starting BCA and BCom courses in his institution. The amount was brought down to Rs two lakh.

Jayalakshmi had approached the High Court challenging the order of the Lokayukta Court. Justice H N Nagmohan Das suspended the conviction order.

Order reserved

The High Court has reserved the order on a petition filed by B E Umapathy, Director General of Police (Research and Restructuring), challenging the appointment of Lalrokhuma Pachau as Director General and Inspector General of Police.

The Central Administrative Tribunal had quashed a petition of Umapathy, in which he claimed that he was more eligible for the post of the top cop.

He had claimed that the high-level committee headed by the Home minister did not consider his seniority and overlooked corruption allegations against Pachau.
