The residents of Hebbal and surrounding areas staged a protest on Sunday condemning “short sightedness” of the State government in planning flyovers and road-widening projects on Hebbal Road.

Hundreds of people including senior citizens, disabled people and activists from several organisations walked for one and a half kilometre from Hebbal police station to KR Puram loop as part of the protest.

Speaking to reporters, Manohar Elavarthi of Praja Rajakiya Vedike, alleged that the project had been dogged by problems since its beginning. He said that the government had been focussing on providing infrastructure for motorists, all the while neglecting safety of pedestrians.

He said that senior citizens and those bound on wheelchairs were finding it difficult to cross roads due to absence of zebra crossings.  Several people jump over railway crossing near KR Puram since there is no underpass. Around 30 trains pass through the stretch every day, he stated.
