A case of H1N1 death was reported at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences in the City on Friday. This is the first swine flu death reported in the City this year.

Thirty-five-year-old Rathnamma, a resident of Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district, was reportedly brought to Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences, last week. She visited two other nursing homes before being admitted to the hospital. Her condition worsened on Jan 25, according to doctors who treated her.

“Her condition became serious on Jan 31, and doctors confirmed on February 2 that she was infected by H1N1,” said Rajini M, District Health Officer, Bengaluru (Urban). “This is the first confirmed and reported death due to H1N1. We have asked hospitals to take precautions. Family doctors should be more alert,” she added.

In 2014, the number of H1N1 cases had more than doubled compared with 2013. Statistics obtained from the Health department reveal that from January this year, out of 325 who were tested, 75 were reported positive for H1N1. As many as 38 people have tested positive in Bengaluru from Jan 2015. Rathnamma worked as a construction labourer in Whitefield.
