Hotel fined Rs 1 lakh for using plastic

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), East Zone officials on Monday raided several hotels and shops and seized huge quantity of banned plastic materials.

Officials raided Hotel Shivasagar in the Utility Building and state-owned Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium on MG Road. The hotel and shopowners were directed to bring down the use of plastic and instead, promote jute and cloth bags.

BBMP Health officer (East Zone), Dr Siddappaji said a penalty of Rs 1 lakh was imposed on Hotel Shivasagar. “Hotel Lost Caravan on Church Street was fined Rs 24,000 for unscientific disposal of waste and continuous usage of banned plastic materials such as polythene bags and disposable cups. Also kitchens of a few hotels, including Starbucks Coffee restaurant were sealed for operating without a licence,” Siddappaji added.

He said that a penalty of Rs 2 lakh was slapped against various hotels for not responding to the awareness campaign against plastic use and repeated warnings. Similar drive will be carried out on Tuesday in other parts,” he added.
