Lakshmi’s (26) parents, who arrived in the City from Andhra Pradesh after she breathed her last, alleged that Suresh was denying her proper food and he also didn’t take her to a doctor when she was ill, police said. Lakshmi, who was married to Suresh six months ago, was ill since last month.

On Thursday, her condition worsened and by the time she was taken to Victoria Hospital she died.

Alleging ill-treatment and cruelty by Suresh, her parents said that he was pestering her for more dowry even after they had paid him Rs one lakh immediately after the marriage. The continued harassment took a heavy toll on Lakshmi's health, they added.

Suresh, however, denied the charges saying he didn't ill-treat his wife and that she died as the haemoglobin level in her blood had decreased.

Registering a case of dowry death and dowry harassment, Subramanyapura police are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of Lakshmi’s death. Suresh will be produced before the Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Saturday.
