ID plan to weed out unauthorised autorickshaws

Bangalore Traffic Police and Transport Department are jointly working on an initiative that will help weed out autorickshaws running without proper permits.

A unique ID programme for autorickshaw drivers to identify and weed out those without necessary permits, is being taken up as part of ongoing 25th Road Awareness Week that began on January 21 and end on January 27. 

Out of around 1,30,000 autorickshaws around 30,000 don’t have permits, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B Dayanand. Transport Commissioner K Amar Narayan said the initiative was introduced to eliminate illegal autorickshaw drivers.

The second day saw a 3-km walkathon at 8 am, followed by a bike rally to raise awareness against menace of drag racing at around 9 am, both from Kanteereva Stadium, besides a painting competition for schoolchildren.

As many as 1,000 people took part in the walkathon. There were 100 Harley Davidson bikers. Nearly 3,000 schoolchildren took part in the painting competiton at Cubbon Park.
