Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will launch Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on Wednesday.

The ITS will benefit bus passengers and improve operational efficiency of the city transport utility. Developed at a cost of Rs 79 crore, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has adopted the technology despite running under loss.

Ekroop Caur, Managing Director of BMTC, defended the move saying that the technology would help plug pilferage and fetch more revenue by improving operational efficiency.
Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, she said that the BMTC will pay around Rs 1.1 crore a month, for five years, to an agency which has installed the ITS.

BMTC app
The BMTC will also launch an app on ITS during the inauguration for the passengers to track buses. The BMTC also intends to provide a women safety feature in the app which would enable them to send alert messages to their relatives during emergency.

The ITS includes three components like - Vehicle Tracking Machines (VTM), Electronic Ticketing Machine (ETM) and Passengers information System (PIS).

At least 35 major bus stations in the city have been installed with the PIS which will display information on the arrival of buses, time taken to reach the destination, etc.
