Serial rapist and killer M Jaishanker, who had escaped from the Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara on the night of August 31, 2013, before being caught six days later, had paid a hefty bribe to a jail official who provided him with a duplicate key to his prison cell.

Jaishanker, who was in four-day police custody till Wednesday, had even revealed the identity of the official who aided him in the daring escape, a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

On Wednesday, the notorious prisoner was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate who refused to extend his police custody by two days as sought by the prosecution. Jaishanker was then sent to jail in the evening. A senior prison officer insisted that adequate security measures had been put in place in the wake of Jaishanker’s previous jailbreak.

A senior police officer, who is overseeing the investigation into Jaishanker’s escape, said that the probe was still not conclusive. It was being investigated how Jaishanker got the money to pay the bribe, how it was smuggled into the prison and who switched off power supply to the wall fence that helped the man escape, the officer said.

Shanta Kumar, ACP (Madiwala sub-division), who is the investigating officer, said that he would submit the report by next week to the police top brass, but refused to divulge details of the probe.
