Basavanagudi MLA Ravi Subramanya said Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned for the lake’s rejuvenation in the first phase. “The BBPM will call tenders in the next week and work is scheduled to start latest by November 10, 2009,” he said. An  additional Rs three crore will be released for the Kempambhudi lake in the second phase.

At an event on “Saving Lakes and Environment” organised by local NGOs, Subramanya urged the people to take steps to save water bodies in the City. The culture of rain water harvesting needs to be encouraged and recharge pits are the need of the hour to conserve water, he noted. The event saw the filling of the dried-up lake with water, as a token to the future rejuvenation of the lake.

Environmentalist Yellappa Reddy spoke of the grave danger the city faced with its vanishing lakes and history. He explained the conservation of tanks reminding them the “technology” in traditional structures and rituals that their forefathers performed.
