Labourer dies after building beam falls

A 45-year-old construction labourer was killed when a beam supporting the roof collapsed and fell  on him on Saturday evening.

Kuppaiah Chinnaswamy, a resident of Uttarahalli, sustained grievous head injuries and was taken to Bowring Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said.

According to the Vidhana Soudha police, the incident happened around 4.10 pm when Kuppaiah and another labourer, Muniyappa, were working in the MS Building. They were demolishing a part of the building to partition it at Gate 4 on the fourth floor of  the agriculture and horticulture department.

One of the beams, a-foot wide, cut  loose and fatally fell on Kuppaiah. The  body has been sent for postmortem.

Based on inquiries, the  Vidhana Soudha police have  booked a case against a  sub-contractor, identified as Arunachalam, for negligence and not following norms for the safety of his  workers.  Arunachalam has been booked under IPC section 304-A (causing death by  negligence).
