A 10-year-old male leopard died at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) following an infection in its tail and subsequent complication after the amputation of the tail.

According to BBP officials, the leopard had been chewing and mutilating the amputated tail, and the injury had to be repeatedly sutured. The animal started showing symptoms of anorexia and lethargy, and was under observation and treatment, the officials said.

The officials said that the leopard ultimately succumbed without showing any response to the treatment. A postmortem examination has been conducted and visceral samples have been sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals for clinical examination, the officials said.

The results of the examination are awaited. The leopard that was born at the BBP was not given a name.
