According to prosecution, the fast track court of Srikanth Vatavati sentenced Suhail alias Abdul Razzak to life imprisonment on October 16, for setting his wife Shabana Begum on fire, in November 2005.  Shabana was wedded to Suhail in 1998 and had a daughter from him. Suhail tortured Shabana mentally and physically since their marriage.

Unable to bear the harassment, she finally approached the family court seeking separation. However, the family court gave them an opportunity to live together. Further the couple left their old house and shifted to Bytarayanapura.

On November 13, 2005, Suhail assaulted pregnant Shabana doubting her fidelity. He then poured kerosene on her and set her on fire before leaving the place with his daughter. She succumbed to burns at Victoria Hospital.

Police then arrested Suhail. On Friday the court awarded life imprisonment to him along with a penalty of Rs 5,000.
