A mentally ill man climbed a mango tree on JC Road on Monday and threatened to commit suicide by jumping down, if he was not given money for his treatment.

Personnel of the Fire Services department and the police managed to bring him down, but only after a tiring effort. Mahesh climbed up the tree in the afternoon and started throwing the branches down and mangoes at vendors. He shouted at the top of his voice and demanded Rs 60,000 for his treatment, the police said.

The police arrived at the spot and made him climb down the tree by promising to fulfil his demand. The police had to summon the firemen to bring Mahesh down from the tree in an effort that lasted three hours. He then started throwing mangoes at the police and accused them of cheating him.

He was shifted to Nimhans as he did not give information about his relatives, who he said stayed in Bengaluru.
