Man convicted of wife's murder escapes from Victoria Hospital

A 35-year-old man sentenced to life imprisonment for his wife’s murder has escaped from Victoria Hospital where he was undergoing treatment after he consumed a disinfectant.

Masthi Kumar (35), a native of  Shivamogga, escaped when the two guards deployed to keep a watch on him took a break for dinner around 9 pm on Tuesday. In January this year, the sessions court in Shivamogga convicted him of murdering his wife in 2015 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He was lodged in the Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara here.

On Saturday, Kumar consumed a disinfectant as part of his escape plan. He was initially treated at the prison hospital and later moved to Victoria Hospital. The guards were posted outside the ward to keep a watch on him.

The jurisdictional VV Puram police have taken up a case against Kumar and are hunting for him.
