There have been more than 45,000 reported cases in Africa this year, killing more than 2,300 people.

A 30-year-old man drowned in eastern Bengaluru's Horamavu Lake while bathing in it on Thursday, a police officer said.

Basappa, from Yadgir, got stuck in the waterbody moments after he jumped into it around 9.30 am. Passersby noticed him struggling and tried to rescue him but could not succeed. They then called the fire and emergency services personnel as well as the police.

The jurisdictional Hennur police and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot and carried out a search operation for hours without success. The search operation was later called off and will resume on Friday morning. Basappa's identity was established from clothes found on the tank bed, the officer added.
