But the project, which would have helped people get easy access to all fisheries-related information at a common location, has been shelved.

The Director of Fisheries and other higher officials of the department are clueless. “We don’t know the reason why the project was dropped,” said Veerappa Gowda, Director of Fisheries. “We are corresponding with various secretaries and under secretaries. Their response is awaited,” he added.

The Rs five-crore project was proposed and sanctioned in 2007 by the then Fisheries Minister, Nagaraj Shetty. The building was planned to house all the five offices of the department under one roof, which are currently scattered across the City.  Even land was reportedly sanctioned for the project, behind Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University campus in Hebbal.

Presently, out of the department’s five offices, three are rented and crammed. “Two people share one table in the office because of lack of space and table,” said a high official source who did not wish to be named. “A large office of our own could not only save the rent but also help to accommodate everyone,” he felt.
