Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, Mayor R Sampath Raj distributed 300 eco-friendly idols to citizens as part of the awareness campaign organised by the BBMP welfare association.

The event, held at Hudson Circle near the Cubbon Park gate, also featured a street play to explain the danger to the environment posed by idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP).

"The BBMP is raiding shops selling PoP Ganesha idols," Raj said at the event. "We are also creating awareness among the vendors selling these idols. I urge citizens not to buy the idols that pollute our lakes and damage our environment. Using eco-friendly idols has been in our culture."
