Miscreants made away with cash and gold ornaments after assaulting an elderly couple at ITI Colony, Dooravani Nagar, under KR Puram police limits in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the police, four unidentified miscreants gained entry into the house of Narayana Murthy, 59, a retired ITI employee and his wife Nagarathna, 55, around 4 am from the rear door.

They had covered their faces with handkerchiefs and began searching for valuables with the help of a torch. They opened the bedroom door assuming that the house was empty and found Murthy and his wife asleep.

When Murthy woke up and tried to raise an alarm, they assaulted him and his wife, tied and gagged them and made away with Rs 30,000 in cash, 100 gram of gold and 0.25 kg silver.

The couple managed to untie themselves and alerted the neighbours, who shifted them to a hospital.

The miscreants conversed in Hindi and are suspected to have done a recce before committing the crime. The couple had locked the front door and use only the rear door for their daily activities.

The miscreants thought that the house was locked and gained entry into the house from the rear.

The couple had packed their household items and were about to shift to Mysore on Wednesday, said a senior police officer.
