A missing cellphone helped the cops in cracking a murder case in Venkatadri Layout.

Jyothilakshmi, who lived alone in a flat was found dead at her house, with stab injuries on August 1. Her cellphone had gone missing soon after her murder.

The police tracked down the cellphone to a person in Bilekahalli who said that he found it abandoned in front a bakery, a day after the murder.

Taking the cue, police formed special teams and started questioning known offenders. They rounded up Arun Kumar, who was arrested for bike theft in 2009 and was on the police list.

A senior official said Kumar gave contradictory statements and finally spilled the beans on further interrogation.

Deep in debt

According to police Kumar had debt close to Rs five lakh and was unemployed. In order to discharge his debt with easy money, Kumar hit upon the idea of robbing a home-alone woman.

Upon sustained interrogation, Kumar confessed to having observed Jyothilakshmi living alone in the flat and also came to know that she had bought a new flat in BTM Layout and was about to move out soon.

He confessed to having slit the throat of Jyothilakshmi and fleeing the house, without robbing any valuables except for her high-end mobile phone.
