On Wednesday, prominent Muslim leaders met under the auspices of the Karnataka Muslim Muttahida Mahaz (KMMM), an umbrella organisation of 28 organisations of the State. The KMMM convener Masood Abdul Khader said that the meeting resolved to back the stand taken by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) that the verdict should be respected "under any circumstance".
"We will not take to the streets if the verdict goes against the community. An adverse verdict will not be the end of the road as we could still approach the Supreme Court," Maulana Riyazur Rahman Rashadi, Imam of the City Jamia Masjid, told Deccan Herald.
Apart from apprehensions on the verdict inciting communal passions as it deals with a highly vexed issue, the community leaders are also worried of the scheduled day - Friday - when Muslims flock in large numbers to mosques to offer the weekly prayer. Hence they have asked the Imams to take up the issue in the Friday sermon only "subtly".
Maulana Iftikhar Ahmad Qasmi, President, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Karnataka said that the mosque authorities have been advised to keep in touch with the police.
