Ahead of the launch of the state government’s subsidised food outlets Indira Canteen, ‘Namma Appaji Canteen,’

a subsidised canteen set up by a JD(S) legislator in the name of the party supremo H D Deve Gowda, will be inaugurated on Wednesday.

Namma Appaji Canteen on 50-feet-road in Hanumanthanagar, south Bengaluru, will be open to the public from Wednesday morning.

The canteen will be inaugurated by Deve Gowda. The canteen will provide free meals to everyone on Wednesday to mark the inauguration. Along with Deve Gowda, his wife Chennamma, sons, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and former minister H D Revanna, and Nanjavadootha Swami will be present.

As of now, Namma Appaji Canteen will be serve breakfast and lunch. Its rate card is similar to that of the proposed Indira Canteen, where coffee or tea is available for Rs 3, breakfast for Rs 5, which is either kharabath, kesaribath, thatte idli or vada. Ragi mudde (ragi ball) lunch would cost Rs 10. While breakfast will be available from 7.30 am to 10 am, lunch will be served from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm.

MLC and jeweller T A Sharavana, who will run the canteen, said the first canteen is being inaugurated on Wednesday. After studying the response for a month, more outlets will be opened in the coming days. He plans to set up 27 such canteens across the city. “We are aiming to make food available for all classes of people, especially pourakarmikas,” said Sharavana.
