Addressing a gathering on the ‘Reforms in the Electoral System’ at the Indian Institute of Science, he said despite recommendations made to curb money power, corruption in elections in India had not declined. “Among all methods, money seems to be the most empowering tool to sustain a winning seat in the elections. Bribery seems to work for everyone, making it the primary means of gaining an extra vote for the candidates”, he said.

He said the threats involved in elections included paid news, fragmentation of polity and criminals in fray and in legislature. There is a lack of faith in the local police and hence, candidates rely on the extensive use of central police.”  Under paid news, he said, a complete distortion regularly takes place. The immediate actions may include a comprehensive legislation and compulsory voting.
