Newlywed commits suicide over 'dowry demand'

A newlywed woman committed suicide at her house in Benson Town on Monday.

According to the police, the deceased, Ammu, 23, married Gajendra three and a half months ago. He is a mechanic and the couple resided in Benson Town.

On Monday, Ammu hung herself from the ceiling when Gajendra left for work. The incident came to light when he came home that evening. Gajendra informed his parents and the police. The police informed Ammu’s parents and shifted her body for post-mortem.

Ammu’s parents lodged a complaint stating that at the time of marriage they had agreed to give Rs one lakh as dowry and had managed only Rs 60,000. They had promised Gajendra that they will pay the remaining amount in a few months. But he constantly fought with Ammu about it and asked her to bring the money. Unable to bear the torture, she committed suicide, stated the complaint.

A case of abetment to suicide has been registered at the JC Nagar police station and the police are looking for Gajendra, who is absconding.
