The 10th edition of the International Scrabble Tournament concluded on Sunday.
The event was organised by iGATE at its Whitefield campus. As many as 105 people from across 17 countries took part in the tournament which offered a prize money of Rs nine lakh.
Defending world champion in international Scrabble, Nigel Richards, retained his title by winning the tournament. Richard, who hails from New Zealand, won the tournament by beating Alistair Richards of Australia. The world champion played a total of 35 games during the course of the tournament, with each game lasting about an hour.
M S Murali, Senior Manager, Employee Engagement, iGATE, said that the event is accredited by the International Scrabble Body, which sees participation from seeded players.
The contest was open under three Divisions - A, B and C. Division A saw participation by the top 40 rank holders from the previous year, while Divisions B and C comprised participants with lower rankings in the decreasing order.
Players under Division C participated only on two days, in order to improve their rating for the next year’s tournament.
Simultaneously, Scrabble contests at the college, corporate and city levels were conducted. The preliminary rounds for these were conducted earlier in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi.
