Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) former chairman Nandan Nilekani on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Press Council of India against BJP candidate from Bangalore South Ananth Kumar, for his alleged misinformation campaign against Aadhaar project.

Ananth Kumar has been trying to gain mileage by abusing the project which he himself was promoting only a few months ago.

“I have said from the beginning that I am running a clean and honest campaign, because I stand for a better kind of politics. I think the dirty tricks of my opponent makes his desperation apparent,” Nilekani, who is contesting against Kumar as the Congress candidate, stated in a release to the media.

Kumar had recently alleged that the Aadhaar project was niraadhaar (without any basis) and that a CBI probe should be conducted into the functioning of UIDAI.

The UIDAI never said that the Aadhaar numbers were mandatory. This is a falsehood being spread by his opponent.

“The BJP candidate is doing this because he has no good record to defend. He is busy taking credit for Cauvery II stage which was completed in late 1970s, and for Cauvery III stage which was completed in the early 1990s. Now he is using Modi to try and get elected because he has nothing to say about himself. He is attacking Aadhaar to draw attention away from his own lack of achievements,” he alleged.

Nilekani also said Kumar never raised a single question against the project in the Parliament. He was in fact supportive of it. But the BJP leader started opposing it after he become the Congress candidate in Bangalore South.
