There is some relief for commuters using the congested Okalipuram junction as one part of the ongoing project — from Sujatha theatre to Malleswaram via Gathemane Church – was temporarily opened.
Minister for Bengaluru Development and Town Planning K J George on Tuesday inaugurated the road in order to provide an alternative access from Majestic and Malleswaram to Rajajinagar 6th Block. The alternative road was opened since the old road will be blocked to build a girder on the bridge next to the railway track.
The alternative route and the construction of a bridge are part of the ongoing signal-free corridor at Okalipuram, which includes an underpass and two bridges. The eight-lane corridor is being developed at a cost of Rs 102 crore.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is developing the corridor, has acquired three acres and 20 guntas of railway land. In return, it purchased an equal extent of land near Binny Mill and handed it over to the railways.
The acquired railway property houses some railway quarters and a running room (lodging for train crew). The BBMP paid Rs 9 crore to the railways for the construction of quarters and Rs 3 crore for shifting the running room. The Palike has also paid the railways for the construction of an underpass.
The corridor provides unhindered access from Rajajinagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Vijayanagar, Nagarabavi and Malleswaram to the KSR Railway Station and Majestic Bus Stand.
