Bengaluru: The Kannada film industry has come in support of Ramya to condemn online abuse by Darshan’s fans.

Actor Shivarajkumar and his wife Geetha, in a statement released on social media, expressed their solidarity with Ramya.

"It is not right to attack any woman. We should not tolerate it. Social media is a very powerful tool that should be used for one’s growth and not to hurl abuses or spread hatred. Your stance is right, Ramya, we stand by you,” the statement read.

Actor Vinay Rajkumar wrote on Instagram, “It is our responsibility to stand against all kinds of harassment. A world that looks down on women must be destroyed before it can grow.”

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) president M Narasimhalu told DH that real fans would never stoop so low. “They wouldn’t do anything that would tarnish the reputation of those they admire. A few do it which affects the whole fan community,” he said, also adding that the chamber stands by Ramya’s decision of filing a police complaint.

The hashtag #WeStandWithRamya was trending on social media platforms on Tuesday as Netizens stood with the actor-politician.

On Monday, Ramya met Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar and submitted a complaint against fans of actor Darshan who allegedly sent derogatory messages, including rape and murder threats to her.

Last week, the Supreme Court had criticised the Karnataka High Court’s decision to grant bail to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, accused in the Renukaswamy murder case.

Reacting to this on social media, Ramya wrote: “SC is a ray of hope for the common people of India — justice for the family of Renukaswamy.” This triggered many purported Darshan fans to attack her and post rape and death threats on Instagram.
