'Over 2.4 lakh senior citizens being abused everyday'

On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Prevention Day, organised by the Nightingale Medical Trust (NMT), Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde said both youngsters and senior citizens should be counselled to combat the perils of the elder abuse.

Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said, “Senior citizens should check the background of the domestic servants before employing them. Elderly citizens should be friendly with neighbours so that at times of emergency, they would come to the rescue.”

Dr Radha Murthy from NMT said, “The abuse meted out to senior citizens manifests in many ways like depression and loneliness. Youths and elders have to be sensitised about the negative effects that abuse could have on elders druing the sunset years of their lives.”
