The duo, Amaranath (28), a resident of Bommanahalli and employed at a garment factory, and Ravi, were speeding away after robbing two elderly women of their chains. But they bumped into JP Nagar police inspector S K Umesh near Pensioners' park behind Ragigudda Anjaneya temple, who was on their trail on receiving the information about the chain-snatching in the area. When the two tried to attack the inspector, he opened fire from his revolver injuring Amarnath in the leg.

Amarnath, who is admitted at Government hospital in Jayanagar, told Deccan Herald, "we took to crime to clear our debts. Ravi is a skilled rider and we decided to go on a chain snatching spree. We selected JP Nagar as there are many routes to escape. Between 9 pm and 9.20 pm, we snatched chains from two elderly women."

SI Manoj and inspector S K Umesh swung into action on getting the information from the Bangalore South police control room about the chain snatching.  The police recovered two gold chains from Amarnath.
