Known as “the Christian prophet of religious pluralism”, Stanley Samartha, was an eminent theologian, writer and ecumenical leader and an ordained minister of the Church of South India. He was the first director of the Unit for Dialogue with People of Living Faiths and Ideologies at the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The Bangalore Initiative for Religious Dialogue (BIRD) was formed in 2001, by a small group of Hindus, Muslims and Christians in Bangalore, to promote inter-faith amity in line with promoting inclusiveness for preserving India's religious diversity. Samartha Memorial Lecture series organised annually is the signature event of BIRD’s inter-faith activities.
