Medical Education Minister S A Ramadas on Friday told mediapersons that, the Centre, at a conference of Health ministers and Medical Education ministers in Hyderabad on January 12 and 13, promised to provide a research wing and additional infrastructure at the institute.
The State government will have to provide 10 acres for the institute, he said adding that land would be identified within a week. Besides, the government will invest 10 per cent of the total requirement to be decided by the Centre.
Communicable diseases
Ramadas said the conference deliberated at length on addressing the spread of communicable diseases.
The participants felt that the money spent all these years to prevent the spread of diseases had not yielded expected results.
All state governments were told to hold meetings of standing committees of health in urban and rural local bodies on necessary measures to check spread of diseases like cholera, malaria, chikungunya and dengue.
The State government will hold a meeting of the standing committees before the first week of February, he said.
Free treatment
Ramadas said the Centre had chosen 100 districts across the country to set up centres for free treatment of diabetes and cancer. Kolar and Shimoga districts were among them.
The Centre will make a formal announcement of the scheme in the coming budget, he added. The Centre also agreed to support the upgrade of the national mental health institute in Dharwad. The State government will send a proposal to the Centre, he said.
To facilitate research in mental health, the Centre will release Rs 1.5 crore each, for all government medical colleges to hold courses in mental health.
