The High Court on Tuesday sentenced four people to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for gang raping a 22 year-old woman in 2005.

Justice Dilip B Bhosale, heading a Division Bench, set aside the order of a lower court acquitting the rapists. The court allowed an appeal by the State government and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on them.

The court sentenced Gangadharappa, Siddappagari Manjunath, Gopala and Gadampalli Shrinivas of Shidlaghatta, Chikkaballapur to
10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

According to prosecution, the four men had gang raped the woman in a forest on September 22, 2005, when she went to relieve herself. Unable to bear the humiliation, the victim tried to burn herself. She recounted the incident to her husband and eventually succumbed to her burn injuries.

The High Court considered the lady’s testimony to her husband and convicted the four for gang rape.
