Report sought on cattle trafficking

The Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi has directed various departments, including police, Animal Husbandry and BBMP and all police commissionerates in the State to submit an action taken report by October 10 in cases of alleged illegal trafficking of cattles and slaughtering.

Animal Welfare Officer of Animal Welfare Board of India Joshine Anthony had filed a plaint stating that more than a lakh cattles, illegally brought into the City, were ready for slaughtering.

On Wednesday, Joint Director (Animal Health) BBMP submitted that since 2009, after setting up of Karnataka Meat and Poultry Marketing Corporation, the Palike has maintained and managed three authorised slaughterhouses.

He submitted that cows, calves and camels are not allowed to be slaughtered.   
The Upa Lokayukta said that various departments including the BBMP have failed to establish slaughterhouses as per specification. In this regard, BBMP submitted that the project is under progress at Harohalli and it is waiting for additional fund from Central government.
