Residents near Varthur Lake fear that private players are dumping loads of soil on the banks of the lake, near Varthur Kodi.

On Monday, one of the residents noticed that the gate to the lake was broken and several trucks were entering the area and dumping loads of soil. “When we discussed this in our residents group, some of them said that they had seen cars with flashing lights along with trucks in the same area. They thought that there was some official work going on,” one resident living in the area said.

The residents informed the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) about what they saw. “The BDA officials told us that they had complained about the broken gate to the police but no action had been taken. They restored some of the concrete poles and went back. On Tuesday morning, the poles were again knocked down and more soil was dumped,” the residents said.

A BDA official said the gate seemed to have been broken by locals who wanted to take a short-cut. “We found the gate broken and we filed a police complaint on August 1. The concrete poles were also removed by some miscreants.” The official said dumping was part of the ongoing work by the Minor Irrigation Department to lay pipelines for the KC Valley project.

Residents, however, are not convinced and believe that private players are involved.
