Hundreds of residents of Kathriguppe and surrounding areas in south Bengaluru on Tuesday turned up to protest against the dumping of waste on Kathriguppe Main Road.
The agitation received a shot in the arm when eminent citizens such as freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, theatre personality H D Somashekar, science and environment writer Nagesh Hegde and Rajashekhar V N of Save Bangalore Committee participated in the protest under the banner of Jagrutha Nagarikara Vedike.
People were angry that the ‘secondary waste collection point’ for segregating waste and loading it onto trucks resembled a mini landfill as the Palike had not bothered to remove the muck for months, let alone segregation on a daily basis. They were also upset that the door-to-door collection of waste was not happening for almost a year, which resulted in the residents throwing waste in vacant sites or roads.
They demanded that the Palike penalise those throwing garbage on the road and other public places.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Rajashekhar said, “Various people petitioned to the BBMP authorities but in vain. It was only when we threatened to launch an agitation, the solid waste management division of the Palike swung into action and overnight cleared the waste accumulated on the main road.”
