The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday directed the hookah bar owners to respond to the demand notices issued to them by BBMP health officers. Disposing of a batch of petitions filed by restaurants having hookah bars, Justice A S Bopanna directed the BBMP health officers to hear their plea and settle the matter within 30 days.

Mudassar Pasha, owner of a restaurant and others had approached the court, seeking directions to quash the demand notices issued to them by the health officers. The officers had raided many restaurants and issued notices to them for running hookah bars without permission. The petitioners were not given back the equipment, though they paid the penalty.
