City police have arrested five men for allegedly attempting a robbery in the house of a City-based businessman at Frazer town on Sunday.

The arrested are Alexander, 26, Ramesh, 30, Wilson, 28, Mani Maran, 32 and  Cheluvaraj, 34 — all residents of Frazer town. A local court has remanded the suspects in 15-day judicial custody.

According to police, Ashley Warden, a businessman, had agreed to purchase property in Salem district in Tamil Nadu from Mani Maran for a sum of Rs 1.3 crore. Last week, Maran claimed he had procured all the necessary documents and asked Ashley for an advance sum. Ashley, in turn, asked Maran to collect the money from him at the home of his friend Zia-Ul-Rehman in Frazer town.

On Sunday, Maran arrived at Zia's house with four men and allegedly threatened him with weapons. One, Cheluvaraj, grabbed the briefcase containing the advance amount of Rs 15 lakh and tried to flee, Ashley told the police.

But the attempt failed when Shafiq, Zia's younger brother who was in the next room, heard the commotion and fired two bullets from his gun. Ashley, Zia and Shafiq managed to capture Cheluvaraj.

On questoning, Cheluvaraj revealed the locations of other gang members. Pulakeshinagar police have arrested all the suspects.
