The sanitation workers in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar zone on Monday staged a protest against the BBMP over the delay in remitting salary.

About 200 workers gathered near the BBMP zonal office and demanded the wages to be paid.

“It has been four months since the wages are paid and this has affected all the workers,” said Nirmala M, general secretary, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Guttige Pourakarmika Sanghatane (AICCTU).

It has been four months since implementation of the direct payment system. But, the workers in RR Nagar have not received wages after January, claimed Nirmala.

“These workers have not been paid for four months now. However, RR Nagar joint commissioner Thippeswamy has assured us that these workers will be paid in two days or by Thursday,” said Nirmala.

However, neither Thippeswamy nor Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner, health and solid waste management, BBMP were available for comments.

“We will again stage a protest if they do not pay salaries within time,” said Nirmala.
