Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara instructed senior police officers to set up a special unit to bust the illicit drug network which has spread its roots in the state.

Parameshwara, who also holds the portfolio of Home Ministry, held a meeting with the Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police Neelamani Raju, Bengaluru police commissioner T Suneel Kumar and other senior officers on Monday.

The meeting came days after the Legislative Council discussed the widespread use of illicit drugs in the city. Parameshwara had then said that he will not allow the city to become ‘Udta Bengaluru’, referring to bollywood movie ‘Udta Punjab’ which explored the problems caused by narcotic drugs in Punjab.

On Monday, Parameshwara told police officers to come up with a plan to put a full stop to the drug menace. “Before that, find and destroy the opium and marijuana plantations,” he said. Stating that even ragpickers have started selling drugs, he said people have expressed concerns about the problem. He suggested that the narcotics team should be strengthened to avoid a situation in which drug peddling network stops fearing the police.
