An assistant sub-inspector of police committed suicide by hanging at his residence in the Shivajinagar police quarters on January 25, police said. D Ramaswamappa (57), a native of Vijayapura, Devanahalli, was with the Shivajinagar police station.

Ramaswamappa was living at the police quarters situated near the Congress office on Queen’s Road. According to the police, Ramaswamappa’s wife, Muniratnamma found her husband hanging from a ceiling fan around 11 am when she returned home after running an errand on Friday. Ramaswamappa had sent her to fetch fruit juice.

Muniratnamma called her neighbours and rushed him to Bowring Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police have not found a suicide note yet.

Ramaswamappa was on sick leave for a while as he had various ailments after his kidneys failed. He was suffering from diabetes, blood pressure and asthma, a police source said.

Ramaswamappa is survived by a son and a daughter.
