The City police have busted a gang of two who used to lift vanity bags and other valuables from shops posing as customers.

One Chavi Gupta, a resident of HSR Layout, had lodged a complaint with Ulsoor Gate police that she lost her vanity bag when she had visited a saree shop on MBT Street, Ganigara Lane.

She said that the bag contained Rs 16,000 cash, Rs 6.8 lakh worth diamonds and 1.2 lakh worth gold ornaments. Ulsoor Gate police have now arrested two – Janakamma, 65, hailing from Tumkur and Gururaj, 34, from Girinagar, Bangalore and have recovered all the stolen goods.

Janakamma and Gururaj were operating as a team who used to go to shops posing as customers and lift vanity bags and whatever they could lay hands on, from other customers.

They struck gold with Chavi Gupta recently. Gupta had just then purchased diamonds and gold jewellery from Nagarthpet for a relative’s marriage and had visited the saree shop on MBT Street, where she lost the bag. Police sources say that Janakamma had pawned gold ornaments in Tumkur and was trying to sell the diamonds, when the police were tipped off, leading to their arrest.
