According to the BBMP sources, the government has now handed over the Rs 700-crore project to the Bangalore Development Authority, and that too without the knowledge of the Palike.
It is also learnt that the BDA has decided to dump the project owing to financial constraints.
Chairman of the BBMP Standing Committee on Major Works, H Ravindra, was caught unawares when this newspaper contacted him over the issue. He said he would confirm the shifting of the project and under no circumstance would allow it to be taken away from the BBMP.
A cash-strapped BDA has decided to put the project on the back burner.
However, BDA Commissioner Bharath Lal Meena said the project was being put on hold for other reasons. “We are awaiting the completion of the NICE stretch in the vicinity,” Meena said.
Awaiting approval
Earlier this month, while inspecting the road-widening project on Mysore Road, the chairman of the Major Roads Committee had said the project was awaiting approval from the State government.
The work was scheduled to commence in January, he had said.The 13-km flyover is expected to benefit not only the residents of South Bangalore, but also motorists heading to Mysore. It was proposed in the budget to execute the project in three phases and a sum of Rs 100 crore was allotted for the elevated structure. The first phase, which starts from Sirsi Circle, will be three-kilometre long.
